Over the years, many people have asked me to inspect an instrument that they were thinking of buying. To that end, I offer a "Certificate of Condition and Pre-purchase Consultation"

This document is a written, detailed description of an instrument's condition. Some of the conditions it addresses are:

  • Number and condition of all cracks, including cleats
  • Any doublings or patches (replaced wood)
  • Edge and corner replacement
  • Authenticity of all ribs, the scroll and the top and back
  • Authenticity of labels (where appropriate)
  • Significant structural distortions
  • Extent of original varnish
  • Extent of retouching, over-coating
  • Quality of current "set-up"
  • Overall degree of devaluation due to damages

If the owner chooses, I can consult with them after I do the inspection, answering any questions regarding the cost and appropriateness of any repairs/restoration; potential effects of any repair/restoration work on value, sound and playability; probable length of stability of any current repairs/restorations in our Colorado climate or other climates.
